Useful information
The sun is stronger than you think
The Caribbean sun is powerful: even when it is cloudy.
- Apply plenty of high-SPF sunscreen (min. 30/50)
- Reapply several times a day
- Drink enough water
- Avoid the full sun between 11:00 and 15:00
Many people underestimate the sun in the first few days and burn quickly.
Do not leave anything in your car
On Curaçao, as in many holiday destinations: do not leave valuables visible in your car.
- Always take (valuable) belongings with you
- Do not leave anything on or under your seat in view
- Where possible, park in busy or well-lit places
A simple precaution prevents a lot of hassle.
Take beach fees into account
Many beaches on Curaçao ask a small entrance or parking fee.
On average you pay:
- Between 3 and 10 ANG per person or per car
- Extra for sun loungers or parasols
Well-known beaches with a beach fee include Cas Abao Beach, Blue Bay Beach and Playa Porto Mari.
Tip: always bring some cash.
Paying on Curaçao
- The official currency is the Caribbean guilder (XCG)
- US dollars are also accepted in many places
- Paying by debit or credit card is possible at most locations
Still, it is handy to always carry some cash, especially for smaller beaches or local eateries.
Traffic on Curaçao
- You drive on the right here.
- A Dutch driving licence is valid here.
- Distances seem short, but due to the road surface and traffic a drive can take longer than you expect.
- Petrol stations often work with payment in advance.
A rental car gives you the most freedom to explore the island.
Respect nature & the sea
The underwater world is beautiful and fragile
- Preferably use reef-safe sunscreen
- Do not stand on coral
- Take your rubbish with you
- Do not feed wild animals
That way the island stays beautiful for everyone
The wind is your best friend
Curaçao almost always has a pleasant trade wind. It feels wonderfully cooling, but it can make you notice less quickly how strong the sun is. All the more reason to apply sunscreen well
Language & culture
Several languages are spoken on Curaçao: Papiamentu, Dutch, English and Spanish.
The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed. A smile and a little patience will get you a long way here.
Getting used to the island pace
Life on Curaçao is a little calmer than in the Netherlands. Things can sometimes take a little longer. See it as part of the charm — dushi life.
